The Third Bird

Stephanie and I went to Third Bird recently for one of our get-togethers. I made a reservation online in advance because Third Bird has had a lot of positive press recently. It did not seem too busy when we arrived at 6pm, but it filled up later on.

We were seated in the front near the large windows and the bar. The room is very pleasant with wood floors and brick walls. Our server was  very helpful and went over all of his favorites on drink and food menus.

We started with the French fries with harissa aioli. The fries were fresh and crisp and the harissa added a nice kick.

We shared a couple entrees. First, the bison steak. This steak was very buttery soft and tender. I’ve had bison as a burger before and it tends to get dry. That was not an issue with this steak, it was cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The mushrooms were a nice addition to the plate.

The fish we ordered was a special that day, I think it was called John Dory fish. Neither one of us had ever had this type of fish before. It was very good, not too strong and quite light and flaky. There was roasted cauliflower underneath the fish. I liked the crispy bit of skin for a nice crunch.

For dessert we had the doughnut, which was warm, fresh and in some rich pudding. It was good, but I wish the portion was a bit larger.

The other dessert was the PBJ, which was a dense chocolate cake with whipped cream, fruit swirls, graham cracker and peanut toffee. The elements were good separately or together. I’d say this is for chocolate lovers mainly.

We enjoyed Third Bird a lot and found the menu to be far more accessible than we first thought. At first glance, I was not sure there would be too many items we would enjoy, but we loved everything we ordered. The service was excellent and we would certainly go back without hesitation.
