Schuller's Tavern

In all the years I've lived in Golden Valley, I've never been to Schuller's Tavern. Not sure how that happened. I knew it was there, just never made a pint of visiting. We weren't feeling like cooking one night, so we stopped in for dinner. It was plenty busy, but we easily found an open table. Schuller's is a local's place with happy hour, bands on the weekends and free popcorn. They have plenty of TVs and also pull tabs. It's not fancy, but it's not a dive either.

John had the garlic burger brushed with garlic sauce and topped with sautéed onions and melted pepper jack cheese.
I had the bacon cheeseburger with cheddar cheese. It was a solid burger, with a 1/2 pound patty and a nice, fresh bun. The fries were a standard frozen fry, nothing special, but not the breaded type at least.

The service was good- prompt and helpful. The prices for food and beverage are not bad, on the more affordable side. This would be a good spot to watch local sporting events for sure.

Lat 14 Asian Eatery

We have been to Lat 14 twice now since it first opened in late 2018. On our first visit my pictures were terrible and I forgot to make a bunch also, so we were happy to return. Plus, it is located right in Golden Valley very close to where we live, so the location is excellent for us. It is not a huge restaurant, so we have made reservations each time we visited. You might be able to get lucky and spore a spot at the bar, but there are not that many seats there. Reservations do seem to book up in advance, especially on weekends.

The vibe is upscale, which I was not expecting at first, but it is very lovely. The service is fairly formal and polished, which cloth napkins and an industrial chic setting. This certainly does not look like a re purposed Perkins.

Hemingway daiquiri for me
Nam khao – crispy rice, Thai herb salad, name, peanuts. These were sort of like a lettuce wrap. The filling was very flavorful.
Basil wings for John. He loves these wings. The dry rub is super flavorful, and the skin could not be more crispy and perfect.
Snow crab wontons with crab, cream cheese and apricot sweet chili. Very simple but done well here.
Drunken noodles with chicken with thick rice noodles, dark soy, tamarind sauce Thai basil, tomatoes, egg and garlic.
Bacon pineapple fried rice – this is their signature dish and it is amazing! It has pineapple sambal tumis, house cured bacon, pickled golden raisins, cashews, egg, onion and scallion in it. This is even better the next day. Seriously. You have to order it.
Lechon, which is Filipino roasted pork belly with black pepper vinegar and mang tomas. This was super rich. Might be a good dish to share with a large group, but you can’t have more than a piece to two really since it is so rich.

We ordered way, way too much food, but the fried rice really does reheat well, and so do the noodles, so leftovers are a bonus. Prices of most items are in the $10-15 range with signature entrees $17-36 range. Things do add up since you will want to order a bunch of items to share and sample. So it really depends what you order.

We had the same server as our first visit, but this time she seemed a lot less frazzled. I think they are getting into their groove now. Lat 14 is a great addition to the Twin Cities dining scene and in particular a nice change from the standard suburban dining options.

D'Amico & Sons

We recently visited the D'Amico and Sons location in Golden Valley for dinner because John signed up for their loyalty club and received a coupon for a buy one get one free entree. It is so close, but we rarely think to visit for some odd reason.

John had the oven roasted garlic shrimp with spaghetti. It was a generous portion and had excellent flavor. John inhaled it in short order.
I had the Tuscan pot roast with beef, carrots, roasted garlic, parsley, and horseradish sauce with roasted Romano potatoes. The meat had a bit of tomato sauce in it and was very tender. The carrots were lightly sautéed and excellent and the horseradish sauce was the real deal and very strong. I really enjoyed this and will order it again.

The food was excellent and even though it is just counter service they stopped by the table to ask if the food was ok. We enjoyed it a lot and intend to return very soon. The menu has a nice variety, though sandwiches are only available at lunch, they offer salads, soups and pastas as well.

New Bohemia Wurst & Bier Haus

We've been going to New Bohemia in Golden Valley for trivia on a pretty regular basis. We went for dinner when they first opened to try the food and saw a sign about trivia and we could not have been more excited as it is close to home, they have a variety of beer and the trivia is early, starting at 6:30pm. But, I keep forgetting to take photos when we go.

To order food and drink, you place your order at the register as you enter, they give you a number and the food is brought to your table. There are no servers checking back, so if you want another beverage, you need to go to the register or go to the bar. A bit unusual, but it works fine.

The menu is centered on interesting brats and sausages. It seems like they have something for everyone, from a basic brat to crazy stuff like elk, duck and alligator. You also get to pick two free topping for each sausage order.

variety of house made mustards and ketchups

On our first visit I tried the smoked jalepeno and cheese sausage. It was pretty spicy, but not overwhelmingly so. The bun was buttered and lightly toasted, very nice and very fresh.

The freshly made pretzels are very good, although we don't care for the cheese sauce that comes with it. I prefer to dip the pretzel in one of the mustards on the table. The pretzel is huge and meant for sharing.

John has been getting the kielbasa on almost every visit. He said it is delicious. Looks like he added fried onions and sauerkraut to this one.

On our last visit, I had the buffalo blue cheese sausage. It was a bit spicy, but I did not get much flavor from the blue cheese. The apple jicama slaw added a nice crunch and a bit of sweetness.

Our favorite things about New Bohemia are the interesting sausages, wide variety of craft beers and the trivia at 6:30pm on Thursdays. All of those things will keep us coming back on a regular basis for some time to come.

Deals & discounts: Happy hour is daily from 3-6pm, and Monday-Thursday, 10pm-close. It includes $3 select drafts, $3 beer cocktail pints. They also offer $3 pints from Third Street brewing during trivia.

Good Day Cafe

I thought I wrote a post about breakfast at Good Day Cafe ages ago, but I think I have forgotten to take photos on our many past visits. (I did write a post about a dinner visit there back in March.) Apparently I am often totally starving while there so photos totally slip my mind. This probably happens because there is always a wait for a table here and there is no way around it unfortunately.

John had the glazed doughnut pancakes with a side of bacon. The bacon here is always top notch, very thick and smoky tasting. The pancakes were very good, quite fluffy and very sweet as the name would lead you to believe. They probably don't need any additional syrup, there must be sugar in the batter. John thought they were a bit too sweet and would not get them again, but if you have a sweet tooth they might be perfect for you. I had a bite and thought they were tasty, but I can see them getting too sweet after awhile.
I had Iggy's Fried Egg sandwich, which is one of my favorite sandwiches of all time. I order this on just about every visit. It contains ham, fried egg, caramelized onion, tomato, cheddar cheese, and avocado on sourdough bread. It comes with a side of spicy ketchup, but I don't usually put that on the sandwich. I really think the avocado makes the sandwich totally perfect. But I think avocado makes everything better. It is also served with a side of GDC potatoes, which are sliced potatoes with onions and seasoning.  This is a huge sandwich and I usually end up taking half of it home to eat later. It's good even reheated.

The service at Good Day Cafe is always friendly and efficient and the food arrive rather quickly. The place is usually packed and they are pretty great at getting you in and out as quickly as possible.

One tip I've learned to shorten the wait slightly is to call ahead before you leave the house and ask them to add you to the waiting list.

Good Day Cafe

We've been to Good Day Cafe lots of times for breakfast and brunch, but only visited it once before for dinner. One of these days maybe I will remember to take photos of my breakfast there!

Luckily, Good Day Cafe is not as packed at dinner as they are at breakfast so when we arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night we were seated right away. The service was very friendly and efficient throughout our visit. The atmosphere at night is a lot more relaxing than during the day. They turn down the lights a bit and you can actually hear music playing. It is usually so loud during the day I had no idea they played music. They also offer a full bar and a selection of wine and bottled beer.

After much deliberation I ordered the cajun chicken pasta. This was really tasty and enough for leftovers the next day. The chicken was blackened with spicy, cajun spices and cooked perfectly. The sauce was creamy tomato with mushrooms, spinach and onion mixed in. The sauce was a little bit spicy as well. This was really good and I'd definitely order it again.
John ordered the steak sandwich. It was really good with caramelized onions and cooked medium rare as requested, the bun was firm with a nice crunch to it and it came with a delicious side of béarnaise which was really good with the fries or the steak. I think they hand cut their fries and they were awesome too.
Discounts: If you find any coupons for Good Day Cafe let me know! I think they are busy all the time so they don't need to offer discounts.
