Taco Libre

It seems like people have been talking about birria tacos quite a bit recently. So, I did a bit of research and found that Taco Libre in Edina has them and they are rated pretty favorably. Simply order at the counter or online and your number will be called when the food is ready. Pretty simple and straightforward.

I had the quesabirria tacos which have beef, cheese, onions and cilantro inside with a side of consommé and limes. I had mixed feeling on the quesabirria. It was filling and tasted fine, however I'm not sure the consommé added all that  much flavor.
John had the asada burritas with cheese, onions and wrapped in a flour tortilla. Simple and filling.

Taco Libre was a good spot for a quick meal. I'd maybe try a torta or the al pastor tacos next time we visit. The prices are certainly affordable and the portions are generous.

Wooden Hill Brewing Company

We visited Wooden Hill for a weekend lunch recently. Yes, this is a brewery, but the interesting thing about Wooden Hill is that they also have a full kitchen offering a nice variety of burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and other bar food.

We both had the house burger that is topped with cheddar cheese, garlic aioli and house made pickles. I had sweet potato fries as my side and John had the regular fries. It is an attractive looking burger and it tasted great also. It is a thin patty burger. I found the toppings and bun to be nice quality also.

There is a small patio in the front and a larger one in the back and both are dog friendly if you want to bring your canine companion along. The tap room is quite nice and spacious as well.

Town Hall Station

Town Hal Station is a new addition in Edina. It is housed in an former gas station. The glass garage doors in front are a nice feature in the summer, as is the spacious patio. I arrived a bit early to put in my name in anticipation of a wait for a table. There was not a wait for inside tables, and a short wait for patio tables, which was fine with us.

Roasted corn and potato tacos

Beef Short rib tacos

Ragtop fried chicken sandwich

All of the food was very good and matched the menu descriptions. I enjoyed the spicy chicken sandwich a lot and the fries were decent as well. I also tried  a beer sampler flight, which you can see a glimpse of in the food photo, but I otherwise forgot to photograph. I liked trying a few beers before ordering a full one as I’m not that familiar with the Town Hall brewing selections. The cherry lager was very refreshing and fruity.

We had very good service throughout our meal and enjoyed the patio a lot. It is nice to see local restaurants expand and open in the suburbs. While Minneapolis isn’t that far away, it is nice to have quality food and beverage options closer to home. It looks like a full bar is also available for those averse to beer as well.

Mozza Mia Pizza

I had bought a bunch of Parasole gift cards around the holidays, so visiting Mozza Mia was encouraged by that purchase. We arrived after 5pm on a Sunday and were surprised to see a lineup of people waiting to be seated. We were seated very quickly and sat at the bar facing the kitchen.

We started with tomato caprese bruschetta topped with freshly made mozzarella, tomato and basil on grilled sourdough bread. The fresh mozzarella really made this dish excellent. The tomatoes had nice flavor as well, especially considering it is the middle of winter in Minnesota.
John had the supremo pizza topped with bolognese, pepperoni, onion, peppers, mozzarella, provolone and gorgonzola. We felt the crust was a bit on the bland side. I did not get much flavor from the wood fired pizza oven at all.
I had the fig and prosciutto pizza topped with La Quercia prosciutto, gorgonzola and caramelized onion. This was a sweeter pizza and I removed a few figs and enjoyed it a lot.

The service was fine, a bit odd since the server had to wait on us from behind since the kitchen was in front of us, but we had everything we needed when we needed it. We thought the prices seemed a bit high for the quality of the food, so I am not sure we will be rushing back anytime soon.

McCormick & Schmick

We visited the Edina location of McCormick & Schmick recently as we had a Landry's Club discount to use from John's birthday. We had been hoping to find a spot in the bar for happy hour, but it was packed to the gills, we so sat in the dining room.

John had the seared sea scallops with tomato pesto, crab potato hash and sautéed spinach.
I had the shrimp trilogy, which included buttermilk fried shrimp, stuffed shrimp and shrimp scampi with butternut squash orzo. The shrimp were all prepared perfectly and the portion was more than I could finish.
John also got a complementary creme brûlée for his birthday, which was nice touch by the server even though his birthday was a few weeks prior.

The service was excellent and everything went very smoothly, with the waiter checking back as needed.

Details on our last visit I blogged about: http://whereshouldwegomsp.blogspot.com/2012/04/mccormick-and-schmicks.html
