Darcy's Cafe - Grand Forks, ND

We visited Darcy’s Café on our last trip to visit family in Grand Forks for breakfast on Sunday before we left town. We visited at John's sister's suggestion, she had wanted to try it for awhile, so we all met there for breakfast. It is a cozy little place, probably fitting into the dive category, since the ambiance is non-existent and the dining room is utilitarian at best. Customers are seated around a U shaped counter or at small tables around the edges of the room. If it is busy, the line may spill out the door.

We were seated at the counter pretty quickly. The service is certainly quick and efficient, it seems lingering is not encouraged.

David had the French Toast. The portion was really generous and the toast was light and fluffy.

I had eggs over easy with hash browns, bacon and pancakes. The bacon was crispy, eggs cooked perfectly and the hash browns tasted freshly grated. The pancakes were good, but not the best I’ve ever had. They were a bit heavy, not as light as I would have liked.

John had scrambled eggs, hash browns, sourdough toast and hamburger patty. The toast was a good sourdough and the hamburger patty was cooked perfectly too.

This is probably one of the best places we have visited for breakfast in Grand Forks. The food is freshly made and of good quality at great low prices, with quick service so you really can’t go wrong.

Sweeto Burrito - Grand Forks, ND

We went to a couple new places on our last trip to Grand Forks to visit family. The main menu items are tacos, and burritos with French fries and tots as sides. We placed our order at the counter and it was brought out to us pretty quickly.

I had the grilled chicken street tacos chipotle lime style. The chicken had a rather sweet sauce and it was topped with chopped cabbage and chipotle lime sauce. The lime sauce got lost in the sauce the chicken was cooked in. Some of the chicken was dry and chewy too. The cabbage was fresh. There was also only a single sift taco shell. It really needed two as it broke halfway through on all of them. I ordered chips and salsa as my side item. The salsa was pretty potent with a lot of garlic flavor. Not bad, but quite strong.

John had the chicken tacos fresca style with a side of tater tots. Fresca style is chopped tomatoes and onions. His also only had a single soft taco shell.

I maybe should have tried the burritos as it is their core menu item. The tacos are newer to the menu apparently.  The nice thing about their burritos is that you can order them in different sizes depending on how much you can eat. The food is certainly interesting and has potential. We should probably try it again next time we are in the area.

The brand has an interesting story- they started as aa food truck in the oil patch in western North Dakota and grew from there with franchise locations. They currently have five locations with more on the way.

JL Beers - Grand Forks, ND

We have visited JL Beers twice this summer so far on separate trips to Grand Forks. We were in Grand Forks both times to visit family and friends, but we always try to throw in a fun dining experience or side trip. JL Beers is turning out to be the highlight of our trips to Grand Forks. It is a pretty small place that only serves beer, burgers, fries and chips. The beer selection is enormous and ever changing. If you like to try new beer, this is the place for you.

On my first visit I had the BLT BLU burger, which is a blue cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce, tomato and blue cheese with their house made potato chips. Oh my goodness, these chips are great! They slice them right there behind the bar and toss them right into the fryer. The chips are very light and crispy and not at all greasy. You can add different seasoning salts to the chips as well, but I just went with sea salt since I had the R dip on the side. There are several chip dips to choose from as well. I tried the R dip, which is a house special dip. It was a sour cream based chip dip with a fair amount of spice to it. I am not sure what provided the spice in the dip though.

The burger was excellent; very juicy and just the right thickness. I’d estimate these are about ¼ pound burgers. The buns are very good as well; lightly toasted and soft, but strong enough to withstand the juices from the meat and cheese.

John had the Rajun Cajun burger on both of our visits. Apparently he liked it a lot. The Rajun Cajun topping are pepper jack cheese Cajun lime sauce, and grilled onions.

John and I both tried a beer flight on our second visit. It was a good way to try a selection of beers available on tap.

John's Cajun burger on our second visit.

On my second visit I tried the Columbia burger with a side of hand cut Cajun fries. The topping included bacon, cheese and barbeque sauce. The burger was very good, but I think from now on I will stick with ordering the potato chips as my side as I was not that crazy about the fries. I ordered my fries thin cut though, so maybe next time I should try thick cut fries instead. The chips are much more crave-able than the fries though. It is difficult to explain why I did not care for the fries, I guess the fries were tasty, but not as crispy as I would have liked I suppose.

I really enjoyed both of our visits to JL Beers and we will definitely return soon. The atmosphere is pretty basic, I get the feeling they are trying to recreate the feeling of an old school bar, with a long bar taking up one side of the interior and tables on the other side. It is a pretty small place with only 6-7 tables, though some hold as many as 6-8 people at a time. We did not encounter a wait on either of our visits. Also, as a side note, they do not allow children or any patrons under 21 in the restaurant, which is a bit unusual, so no kids menu. The other unusual item is that they do not serve tap water. You have to buy a bottle of water if you wish to add a glass of water to your meal. I don’t know what the reasoning behind the lack of tap water is about, it seemed silly and annoying to me.

The service was quite good on both of our visits. The first time we were seated at the bar and the second time we were at a table. Both times our server checked back on a regular basis to see if we needed anything. We found the prices to be quite affordable—most items are in the $3-5 range, though the burgers don’t include fries or chips you need to add them a la carte.

We also heard JL Beers is going to open in the Twin Cities area sometime next year, so we are looking forward to that as well. Hopefully it is on our side of town in the West Metro!

Red Pepper - Grand Forks, ND

I don't know how I've forgotten to do a post on the Red Pepper in Grand Forks. We have been there many times and even gotten grinder kits to bring home. It is a favorite fast, affordable food option among locals, as well as UND students and alumni. I hesitate to call it fast food, because it tastier and more unique than your average fast food.

On a recent trip to North Dakota to visit John's family, we stopped in after going out for a few drinks. I believe that night time is the best time to visit the Red Pepper anyway.

John had a cheese tostada and a beef tostada. I guess I forgot to take a photo of his beef tostada. The cheese tostada is just cheese with a bit of Red Pepper hot sauce on a plain tostada. The hot sauce has a bit more zip to it than one expects in North Dakota though.

I ordered a beef taco and a combo tostada. I think the best thing about the tacos and tostadas is the freshly grated Colby cheese. All of the toppings are fresh, crisp and recently chopped as well. No brown lettuce here. For some reason they do not have forks available. I have become quite proficient at eating my tostada with a spoon though.

The original Red Pepper in downtown Grand Forks.

The Red Pepper has lots of quirks, but the food is tasty and affordable. I think everyone likes it that way and I hope it remains the same for years to come. And I promise to take a photo of a taco grinder on my next visit!

Grand Forks, ND - The Kegs, Widman's Candy Store

We took a quick trip up to Grand Forks, ND to visit John's sister and his nephew last weekend. There are not a lot on non-chain places to eat in Grand Forks, but I've been trying to find a few gems. It's a difficult task to say the least.

We had a very fun afternoon with John's nephew. We played a round of golf on a kid's course in a park near the Red River, went swimming at our hotel's pool and went shopping for some Fighting Sioux gear at Ralph Engelstadt arena.

For lunch we stopped by a drive-in called The Kegs. It is called that due to the giant root beer kegs that are part of the building. Too funny!

The menu is mainly burgers, sloppy joe's and hot dogs. They also have 1919 root beer, which is really good and one of my favorites.
The exterior. They still have the original drive inn menu and ordering stands.
It is off the beaten path in a residential neighborhood on the north side of Grand Forks.
The french fires were nothing special, just standard frozen fries, but David thought they were pretty good and ate most of one boat himself.
John and I both had the bacon cheese burger. I thought it was a decent burger. Better than McDonald's or Burger King at least. I'm not sure the food was the highlight here. I liked the root beer and seeing the unique building exterior. They are only open in the warmer months, so going back might be a bit of a challenge as we are not up here in the summer too often.
We also stopped at Widman's candy store. David was excited to pick out a few types of candy from the case. He went with their version of peanut butter cups and said they were better than a Reese's peanut butter cup.

Widman's specialty is something called chippers. They are chocolate covered potato chips. These were amazingly good! The chocolate had a very creamy and rich flavor. I should have gotten a bigger bag! We will absolutely be going back again to get more chippers!

Since we usually go to Grand Forks to visit family we don't usually have much down time. But when we do we like to play a little $1 blackjack. Some bars in Grand Forks have pull tabs and blackjack and sometimes a wheel of fortune. The blackjack is usually $1 minimum bets and 3-2 payouts. Any of the gambling profits always go toward charity, so if you lose, at least your money is going to a good cause! We have been unable to find a comprehensive list of bars that offer blackjack. If anyone comes across such a list, be sure to let me know! On this trip we visited Joe Black's and Playmaker's at the CanadInn for blackjack.
