Lu's Sandiwches

We picked up carryout form Lu's sandwiches. I had been craving a bahn mi and had not had once since early this year when I was still going into work. Ya know, during the before times. Anyway, we placed our order online and everything was ready on arrival.

John had the pan-fried chicken bowl (Thit Ga Chien), which comes with green onions, pickled carrot and daikon mix, mixed greens, mint, cucumber, jalapenos, cilantro, and your choice of sauce. Choose a base of vermicelli noodles or rice. He also added an egg roll on the side. He really liked this rice bowl and said he'd order it again.
I had the pock bahn mi on a fresh baguette with green onions, pickled carrot and daikon mix, jalapeños, cilantro, cucumber, pork pâté, house mayo, and soy sauce. This was a very good bahn mi and the meat and bread were great quality.

Come Pho Soup

A  new spot opened recently in the hallway between the Medical Arts Building sort of behind the old Walgreens location on Nicollet Mall. The menu offers pho and Bahn mi sandwiches with a variety of different meat options for each available.

Come Pho Soup is affiliated with La Belle Crepe down the hall, which has offered pho for awhile, but this makes the offering much more prominent. Before you kinda of had to just know they had it on the menu or heard about it form someone as a crepe place isn't somewhere you'd think of for pho.

We all agreed the pho and sandwiches were both quite good for a quick grab and go lunch, but the meat was a bit bland tasting. The toppings and fillings all looked and tasted fresh. The price was under $10 with a beverage, though I forget the exact price.

Since there are no pho or bahn mi shops in this area of the skyway, I think it will be a great addition to the skyway luncheon options.

Bep Eatery

Bep eatery is another recent entry in the skyway dining scene. It seems like there have been a few new openings recently, which is kind of exciting. Bep eatery has Vietnamese street food and offers pho, banh mi, spring rolls and vermicelli noodle salads built to order in the Chipotle style of ordering.

I ordered a banh mi with pork, veggies, herbs, peanut chili dressing and jalapenos. The pork was excellent! It was large pieces of pork, seasoned and grilled. The meat was very tender and there was a lot of it in the sandwich. The vegetables were also very fresh and good and I really liked the peanut chili dressing as it added a lot of flavor. The bread was fresh and crusty on the outside and light and fluffy inside. This was an excellent sandwich and I need to go back very soon and try their other meats with different combinations.

The line moved quickly. You go down the line and select your topping and pay. There is some seating available inside the restaurant, but it looks like most people grab and go back to work. The banh mi was $7.95 plus tax, and it was a large sandwich, so the price seemed fair to me. It is a little out of the way in the Fifth Street towers, but it is certainly worth your trip!

Velee Deli truck

I think this will likely be my last food truck post of the season. The trucks are wrapping things up for the year and most of the good ones are already off the streets. But a few remain, and one of them is the Vellee Deli truck.

I’ve visited the Vellee Deli truck before for burritos. The post is here if you'd like more information: http://whereshouldwegomsp.blogspot.com/2012/05/vellee-deli.html

But I don’t think I have remembered to take a photos of their very delicious quesadillas. They offer a couple types of quesadillas one vegetarian and one chicken. I tried the Dragon Melt quesadilla with chicken, shallots, cilantro, lime, queso cheese and baja sauce. It also comes with a side of sour cream. I added two kicks to it as well, which is their spicy sauce. Last time I got just one kick and it was not spicy at all. This time, I could certainly taste the kicker sauce! The exterior of the quesadilla was pleasantly crunchy and it has a lot of fillings inside. It is definitely enough to fill me up at lunch, but I tend to eat smaller portions at lunch time.

Vellee Deli

I hit the food trucks the other day with a few co-workers and managed to get a couple photos. I had the Korean BBQ burrito, which was excellent. It had a lot of tender meat inside with rice, lettuce and salsa. The meat had great flavor and the portion was large and very filling.
Jenny had the bahn mi, which is a Vietnamese sandwich, and it had the Korean BBQ meat, carrots, cucumber, jalapeno and cilantro. We had to take a few bites before taking a photo so you could see what was inside. Sorry for the bite marks!

The weekly schedule of where the truck will be is usually posted on their website if you want to look ahead and figure out where to find them. Otherwise, follow them on Twitter for up to date information.

World Street Kitchen food truck

I think I've discovered my new favorite lunch spot and my new favorite lunch food. Check out the Korean BBQ short ribs yum yum rice bowl from World Street Kitchen below. Ok, ok it is not a bowl, but a box, but they call it a bowl on their menu for some reason! I tried it for the first time last week and I was dying to go back and try it again this week. Yesterday they did not have it on the menu, but they had it today. Maybe they only have it available on certain days of the week. I'm not sure yet, but I intend to figure it out!

Anyway, this box contains a multitude of goodies. I had to make a list of the contents the first time I tried it since I kept running into more and more delicious goodness. They start with sticky rice and piled on top is Korean BBQ short rib meat, mushrooms, chinese broccoli, caramelized onions, green onions, a poached egg, peanuts, sesame seeds, cilantro, Thai basil, and some special sauce. There could have been more goodies I missed!

The meat was tender and had a sweet BBQ sauce on it. There is a nice hit of crunch from the chinese broccoli and the other greens too. The secret sauce is a little bit spicy, though I did see some people adding some rooster sauce to their orders. All of the ingredients fit together really well and you get a different flavor combination in every bite.

This is really enough for two meals since the box contains a lot of food. Some might feel the $10 price tag is a bit steep, but the ingredients are high quality and freshly made. That combination is harder to find among the lunchtime options downtown that you might think.

With WSK and all food trucks, I recommend following them on Twitter to find out their daily hours, location and menus. This truck is always pretty much always parked at Nicollet Mall and 5th Street in the corner of a parking lot next to the light rail station.
