We visited Park Tavern shortly after John’s birthday because he received an email coupon from their birthday club for a free large three topping pizza. This is one of the better birthday deals we have discovered from a non-chain restaurant in this area, so I wanted to share our experience with everyone.
We ordered a pepperoni, sausage and mushroom pizza, along with a beer each. We have had the pizza here before and I am always pleasantly surprised at how delicious it is. The Park Tavern has such a large menu, I think the pizza is an overlooked hidden gem. The crust is thin, but quite crispy and there are a generous amount of toppings on the pizza, but not so many that the crust gets soggy. The pizza sauce is pretty average, as is the cheese. The sausage and pepperoni are really flavorful though.
As always, the service at the Park Tavern was great. The servers are always quick to refill your drinks and check back as needed.
If you are interested in joining the Park Tavern e-club, visit their website for more information. The sign up button is in the main header of the home page. They send emails with coupons monthly and a few more on special events, but it is a manageable number of emails, in my opinion.

JL Beers - Grand Forks, ND
We have visited JL Beers twice this summer so far on separate trips to Grand Forks. We were in Grand Forks both times to visit family and friends, but we always try to throw in a fun dining experience or side trip. JL Beers is turning out to be the highlight of our trips to Grand Forks. It is a pretty small place that only serves beer, burgers, fries and chips. The beer selection is enormous and ever changing. If you like to try new beer, this is the place for you.
On my first visit I had the BLT BLU burger, which is a blue cheeseburger with bacon, lettuce, tomato and blue cheese with their house made potato chips. Oh my goodness, these chips are great! They slice them right there behind the bar and toss them right into the fryer. The chips are very light and crispy and not at all greasy. You can add different seasoning salts to the chips as well, but I just went with sea salt since I had the R dip on the side. There are several chip dips to choose from as well. I tried the R dip, which is a house special dip. It was a sour cream based chip dip with a fair amount of spice to it. I am not sure what provided the spice in the dip though.
The burger was excellent; very juicy and just the right thickness. I’d estimate these are about ¼ pound burgers. The buns are very good as well; lightly toasted and soft, but strong enough to withstand the juices from the meat and cheese.
John had the Rajun Cajun burger on both of our visits. Apparently he liked it a lot. The Rajun Cajun topping are pepper jack cheese Cajun lime sauce, and grilled onions.
John and I both tried a beer flight on our second visit. It was a good way to try a selection of beers available on tap.
On my second visit I tried the Columbia burger with a side of hand cut Cajun fries. The topping included bacon, cheese and barbeque sauce. The burger was very good, but I think from now on I will stick with ordering the potato chips as my side as I was not that crazy about the fries. I ordered my fries thin cut though, so maybe next time I should try thick cut fries instead. The chips are much more crave-able than the fries though. It is difficult to explain why I did not care for the fries, I guess the fries were tasty, but not as crispy as I would have liked I suppose.
I really enjoyed both of our visits to JL Beers and we will definitely return soon. The atmosphere is pretty basic, I get the feeling they are trying to recreate the feeling of an old school bar, with a long bar taking up one side of the interior and tables on the other side. It is a pretty small place with only 6-7 tables, though some hold as many as 6-8 people at a time. We did not encounter a wait on either of our visits. Also, as a side note, they do not allow children or any patrons under 21 in the restaurant, which is a bit unusual, so no kids menu. The other unusual item is that they do not serve tap water. You have to buy a bottle of water if you wish to add a glass of water to your meal. I don’t know what the reasoning behind the lack of tap water is about, it seemed silly and annoying to me.
The service was quite good on both of our visits. The first time we were seated at the bar and the second time we were at a table. Both times our server checked back on a regular basis to see if we needed anything. We found the prices to be quite affordable—most items are in the $3-5 range, though the burgers don’t include fries or chips you need to add them a la carte.
We also heard JL Beers is going to open in the Twin Cities area sometime next year, so we are looking forward to that as well. Hopefully it is on our side of town in the West Metro!

Red Pepper - Grand Forks, ND
I don't know how I've forgotten to do a post on the Red Pepper in Grand Forks. We have been there many times and even gotten grinder kits to bring home. It is a favorite fast, affordable food option among locals, as well as UND students and alumni. I hesitate to call it fast food, because it tastier and more unique than your average fast food.
On a recent trip to North Dakota to visit John's family, we stopped in after going out for a few drinks. I believe that night time is the best time to visit the Red Pepper anyway.
John had a cheese tostada and a beef tostada. I guess I forgot to take a photo of his beef tostada. The cheese tostada is just cheese with a bit of Red Pepper hot sauce on a plain tostada. The hot sauce has a bit more zip to it than one expects in North Dakota though.
I ordered a beef taco and a combo tostada. I think the best thing about the tacos and tostadas is the freshly grated Colby cheese. All of the toppings are fresh, crisp and recently chopped as well. No brown lettuce here. For some reason they do not have forks available. I have become quite proficient at eating my tostada with a spoon though.
The Red Pepper has lots of quirks, but the food is tasty and affordable. I think everyone likes it that way and I hope it remains the same for years to come. And I promise to take a photo of a taco grinder on my next visit!

Chef Shack
I've ordered the Indian spiced mini donuts at the chef shack quite a few times, but I have never tried their other offerings for some odd reason. So on a recent noontime visit I was in the mood for a burger and I thought I'd try their bison burger. I need to add this to the regular rotation! It was amazing!
The burger was very rich and juicy tasting with a bun that was light and fluffy, but strong enough to hold the sizable bison patty. The fried egg and cheese on top of the burger added a very rich and flavorful element. If you are ever in downtown Minneapolis over lunch time I highly recommend the bison burger at Chef Shack!

Angel Food Bakery - Cro-knots
I stopped into Angel Food bakery the other day to pick up some breakfast. I was hoping they would have the famed cronut or as Angel Food is calling them, cro-knots. The cronut is a hybrid of a donut and a croissant and bakeries in New York have been selling them like crazy. Apparently these are the hot new thing in the baked goods world. A bakery in New York has already trademarked the name cronut, so Angel Food had a Facebook contest and is now calling them cro-knots. I suppose the fact that this is a new innovation in baked goods, makes this a really big deal. I know I for one can’t recall the last time a new category of baked good was invented. So, I admit, I was excited to try a cro-knot.
Turns out the cro-knot is worth all the hype. It was very light, fluffy and flaky just like a croissant. The glaze added just the right amount of sweetness. Though I admit I love croissants, so I figured I'd love these too. I was right. I just wished I'd bought more of them! Guess I will have to go back soon!

Sushi Fix - 2013 Food Truck Season
The Sushi Fix truck is back on the streets of Minneapolis to my great joy. I have not had the chance to visit the new Sushi Fix restaurant yet, but I need to get out there soon. At least the truck is bringing high quality sushi downtown again.
On this visit I had the lunch special, which is 4 pieces of nigiri sushi and a roll of the day. They did not have a special, so I was able to pick off the menu, so I went with the spicy tuna roll. Everything was excellent-- very fresh tasting. For the nigiri I think I got two types of tuna, salmon and shrimp.

Quick trip to Wisconsin- El Dorado Grill and Leinenkugel Brewery
A couple weekends ago we went to Wisconsin to visit our friends Megan and Jason and their kids. We visited the local water park Saturday afternoon and had lots of fun with Jack, Hattie and Lily. We had a great trip, even though we came home to a huge power outage in the Twin Cities area.
Saturday night we went out to dinner in Madison and visited El Dorado Grill.

Nice mouse with cheese in a gas station parking lot off I-94.
On our way home on Sunday afternoon we decided to stop at the Leinenkugel brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. We were able to register for a tour just a few minutes after we arrived at a cost of just $1. The tour also included 5 beer samples.

We enjoyed the tour, the tour guide and the beer samples as well as a delicious pretzel. I think the pretzel was $3, but it was a great addition to our beer samples. While the brewery is located about 20 minutes north of I-94, the brewery and tour is a nice place for a pit stop on the way back from Madison or even the Dells. Leinenkugel Brewery

Parma 8200
Stephanie and I met for dinner the other day and decided to try Parma 8200 in Bloomington. It is located in one of the office buildings right off 494 and 100, but it is not in visible location, so I tend to forget all about it.
We started with the fried Sicilian rice balls at the recommendation of our server. They sounded odd to me at first, but they were very tasty. The red sauce on top was very tart and I liked the contrast of the crisp exterior against the soft rice inside. Stephanie also ordered the apple salad, but I forgot to take a photo of it. It was amazing with a wonderful gorgonzola dressing, candied hazelnuts, apples and romaine lettuce.
I ordered the Friday special of the shrimp risotto. It had a generous portion of shrimp, asparagus and risotto. I could not finish it and ended up taking the leftovers home to eat the next day. The sauce was very rich and creamy.
My poor photo skills are in play again here. Stephanie ordered the broiled lemon chicken and it was amazing. I had a few bites and it had a tart lemon sauce with perfectly cooked chicken and delicious roasted potatoes and arugula.
For dessert we ordered the butterscotch panna cotta with sea salt chocolate shortbread. This was amazing and almost as good as the butterscotch pudding we had at Tilia awhile back. Maybe better. The panna cotta was very rich and creamy and the generous amount of caramel on the top put this dessert over the top. The sea salt shortbread helped cut the sweetness of the panna cotta if your palate needed a break. I would not hesitate to order this dessert again and I’d maybe stop in just for drinks and this dessert!

The room is very open and yet cozy and comfortable all at the same time. Definitely and inviting atmosphere. And it is easy to forget you are in an office building. They even have a nice patio out back. They even had a jazz trio playing in the bar while we were there. The music was at a good level, not loud at all. We were seated right away, though I had made a reservation on Open Table in case it was busy. It was pretty quiet when we arrived, but it filled up later on.

Our entrees took a long time to arrive, but we really had not even noticed as we were visiting and having fun. The manager stopped by to let us know what the delay was and offered to take the lemon chicken off the bill and also offered us a complimentary dessert as well. So we were very happy about that as we were probably going to order dessert anyway. Too bad more establishments do not stay ahead of issues in such a professional and proactive manner.

Gopher Bar
I’ve been craving a Coney island from the Gopher Bar lately. Unfortunately, it is not in a convenient location near my home. Why are all of the best places so far away? Maybe it is for the best, so I don’t eat these things that are probably really bad for me so often! It is worth the drive over to St Paul though.
We each ordered a Coney Island and shared a side order of fries. I asked for my Coney without onions. John had the onions on his and he said they were very fresh and crunchy. There was a lot of chili under all of the freshly grated cheese. The griddled, toasted buns are amazing. Very soft and buttery. The chili is not spicy, it seemed more like seasoned hamburger to me than chili, though everywhere makes chili differently. Actually, on their menu they refer to the chili as mustard meat sauce. That explains it I guess. The hot dog had a nice snap to it as well.
A couple years ago we stopped in at the Gopher Bar and had the Coney islands for the first time on St Patrick’s day. I thought maybe the fact that I had consumed several beverages prior to eating the Coney had clouded my judgment, but they were just as good on this visit as our first visit.

The service or ambiance is nothing notable, though it is fun to read all of the colorful and interesting quotes on the walls. The place is basically a dive bar, that happens to have decent Coney dogs. Nothing more nothing less. Nothing trendy around here. The bartender’s service was quick and efficient though. But it was not at all busy when we stopped in at 6pm on a Saturday evening, so we were in and out pretty quickly.
The Gopher Bar really does have the best Coney Islands I have ever tasted. If you are ever in downtown St Paul I highly recommend you go and check it out for yourself.

Smack Shack
Michele, John and I made it to the Smack Shack restaurant over Memorial weekend. We made a reservation in advance, though I am not sure it was necessary as it was busy, but not all tables were occupied during our visit. It might have been slower due to the holiday weekend, I’m not completely sure. We were seated at a nice table near the large open doors, though they had to close them awhile after we were seated as it became rather chilly and windy. Will the weather ever warm up around here? The patio will be great if the weather ever improves!

I started off with a hurricane. Quite tasty and not overly sweet.
John started with the west coast oyster assortment. Nice presentation.
John had the shrimp po’ boy with chips. He said he liked it a lot as the shrimp were lightly breaded and crunchy with a good spicy flavor.
Michele had the original Smack Shack lobster roll with chips. The griddled milk bread is amazing. And the contents of the sandwich are still mostly lobster, in case you were wondering—no filler here.
I had the Connecticut style lobster roll with chips, which is a new addition to the menu. This roll simply contained warm lobster with butter, lemon and chives. This is the lazy person’s way to eat lobster! It was so delicious and yet so simple and perfect.
The service was excellent- attentive but not overbearing. The whole atmosphere was casual and laid back, thought the room was a bit too loud at times. It is very open with nothing to baffle the noise. The bar area was very large and there were two bars. One is straight ahead as you walk in and the lobster boil area is there as well. The other bar area is off to the left and had tons of seating as well. The bar areas were not all that full when we arrived either. I suspect you could arrive a little early for dinner and not have any issues getting a table in the bar.
The menu is considerably larger than the menu from the food truck or the 1029 bar. There are lots of interesting seafood items I’d like to go back try like the crab cakes, lobster boil and maybe the fried chicken. They even offer a hamburger and wings for the non-seafood eaters in your life. And try not to brag too much about all the goodies they are missing!
Deals & Discounts: Happy hour is your best bet for deals at Smack Shack. The daily happy hour runs Monday through Friday 3-6pm and 10-midnight. They have $1, $3 and $5 appetizers on special.
