Angel Food Bakery - Cro-knots

I stopped into Angel Food bakery the other day to pick up some breakfast. I was hoping they would have the famed cronut or as Angel Food is calling them, cro-knots. The cronut is a hybrid of a donut and a croissant and bakeries in New York have been selling them like crazy. Apparently these are the hot new thing in the baked goods world. A bakery in New York has already trademarked the name cronut, so Angel Food had a Facebook contest and is now calling them cro-knots.  I suppose the fact that this is a new innovation in baked goods, makes this a really big deal. I know I for one can’t recall the last time a new category of baked good was invented. So, I admit, I was excited to try a cro-knot.

Turns out the cro-knot is worth all the hype. It was very light, fluffy and flaky just like a croissant. The glaze added just the right amount of sweetness. Though I admit I love croissants, so I figured I'd love these too. I was right. I just wished I'd bought more of them! Guess I will have to go back soon!

Sun Street Breads

I've been reading a lot about Sun Street Breads, but it is not very close to where we live so it is not a good option during the week. We decided to try it out for Sunday brunch recently. 


When we arrived there was a very long line, out the door. It did not move very quickly, but there is not a lot of room to wait inside either. 

I ordered the basic biscuit plus, with bacon, egg and cheese on a fresh biscuit. That is the melted cheese over the top of the sandwich in the photo above. The sandwich was very good. I've heard a lot about their biscuits, but I thought my biscuit was a bit dry for some reason. Maybe it was supposed to be somewhat dry or it was an off day. Not sure. 

John had the biscuit sandwich with scrambled egg and bacon, without cheese. He thought his biscuit was on the dry side as well, but good otherwise. John also had an iced coffee that was really good. 

The pancake was very good. It was very light and fluffy with just a bit of crispness to the exterior. I just ordered one, just so we could give it a try. 


We enjoyed Sun Street a lot. It reminded me a lot of Yum, which is one of my favorites, because it has good food and a casual atmosphere.  I really liked all the tiles decorating the restaurant, from SoMi Tiles. I have some of their tiles in my own kitchen. 


The service at Sun Street is counter service, where you order and they bring your food out once it is ready. The service was all fine and we did not wait too long for our food. I thought the prices were very affordable too.

Angel Food Bakery & Coffee Bar

Hell's Kitchen has added a bakery just upstairs from the main restaurant called Angel Food Bakery and it opened just last week. I stopped in over lunch today and picked up a caramel and peanut brownie. It was very good with lots of soft caramel, peanuts and good chocolate flavor to the brownie. The nuts added a nice touch of salt to the caramel. I think it was $3.50 plus tax. It was a good size and quite filling.

They had a nice variety of other bakery items such as breads, doughnuts, muffins and croissants. Since it is pretty close to work I look forward to trying their other offerings in the future. I'll let you know if anything else I try is interesting!

Yum! Kitchen and Bakery

I can't believe I have not taken the time to write a post about Yum yet. It is probably one of my favorite places for a quick, casual meal. They have a great variety of items on the menu and everything is available for dine in or carry out. The dining room is bright and open, though it can be quite loud when they are busy.

On almost every visit I make to Yum I order the Grilled Chicken Club sandwich. I'm boring and predictable, but it is a perfect sandwich in so many ways, mostly becausee it is actually somewhat healthy. The sandwich contains a skinless, grilled chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and whole grain mustard on toasted whole grain bread. It comes with a side of house made potato chips, which are very light and crispy with just a touch of salt. The bread is freshly made in-house as well.

They have wide selection of bakery items available daily and selections change seasonally, but they always have a variety of breads, cakes, cupcakes and cookies available.

Discounts: I've never come across any coupons or discounts for Yum.
